BBFF26 SALT IN HER VEINS: SURF SHORTS

Byron Bay Film Festival returns for its 20th anniversary!

The ocean means something different to every woman who paddles out. For some it is a place to test the limits of what they can do. For others, it becomes a way back to themselves.

This collection of Short Surf Films travels through very different corners of women’s surf culture: women finding friendship and confidence after beginning again later in life; Cornwall surfers making space for themselves in a culture that has not always seen them; a crew in northern Denmark confronting frozen locks, flat batteries and dark winter mornings simply for the chance to paddle out; and the women of New York’s surf community, where waves, food, migration and cultural identity meet at the edge of one of the world’s biggest cities.

At the heart of SALT IN HER VEINS is She in Storms, following Austria’s first female big-wave surfer Christina Gindi from the towering waves of Nazaré into an altogether different challenge when injury takes her out of the water and forces her to reconsider the identity she has built around surfing. It is a striking portrait of ambition, uncertainty and what remains when the thing that has defined you is suddenly taken away.

Salt in Her Veins is less about who surfs biggest or best than why women keep returning to the water – for freedom, friendship, belonging, resilience and the simple feeling of being exactly where they want to be.

SHE IN STORMS Directed by Antonio Saraiva. 2026. Documentary short.
