Everybody loves a good crime thriller. Look at what rates, always, even today especially from the couch! So now it’s time to step out and enjoy big screen crime with one of the great crime writers and on screen, from a time when the craft lay in performance, direction and production, not in digital effects and post-production gloss.
The Brunswick Picture House is bringing back 4 of the best Agatha Christie crime thrillers, all digitally re-mastered, for a monthly Murderous Brunch, BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE LADIES OF THE BRUNSWICK HEADS CWA. This month of September, The Mirror Crack’d.
The legendary Miss Marple comes to a small town, besieged by tinsel town, to solve a classically twisted murder mystery. When a local woman is poisoned and it seems a visiting movie star was the intended victim there’s guilt in the air everywhere.
The Mirror Crack’d rivals Murder on the Orient Express and Evil Under the Sun for shear star power.
Against a genteel village back drop the movie’s headline “stars”, all play Hollywood phonies with glee and do it with aplomb. The great Angela Lansbury shines as Marple. Taylor is at times bewitching as the demonic yet fragile Marina, the star on a fraught comeback trail. Hudson is at his best, which is always much more than just watchable, he was a fine performer. Novak is an appropriate “airhead starlette”; and she gets the funniest lines. Curtis is the perfect sleaze in Marty, and the wonderful Geraldine Chaplin does much with limited time on screen. And finally Edward Fox is pure fun as the star struck inspector. Keep your eyes out for a young Pierce Brosnan in the crowds as well!
