Festival for Elizabeth Swain

The Brunswick Picture House is proud to present a rare dive into the classics.

TO CELEBRATE THE 80TH BIRTHDAY OF THE GRAND DAME OF CHOIR ELIZABETH SWAIN — a 20-member choir accompanied by a 8-piece Chamber Orchestra will perform Henry Purcell’s “COME YE SONS OF ART” followed by a pop-up reworked rendition of Gilbert & Sullivan’s “TRIAL BY JURY”

Elizabeth Swain was born in 1938 in a tiny country town in Victoria called Numurkah. The daughter of dairy farmers, she went on to have a long and illustrious career primarily in music education in Melbourne, London and Sydney where she established the music department at Newington College. She was awarded an OAM (Order of Australia medal) for services to music education.

Elizabeth then went on to conduct the choir at St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney for a number of years. She moved to the Northern Rivers with her husband Roger 10 years ago, to live close to her children and grandchildren.

Liz’s children, Andrew and Janet Swain, decided it was fitting that her 80th birthday be a concert of some of her favourite music, and we have invited professional and non professional musicians from far and wide to join in.

We hope to make the Festival for Elizabeth an annual festival celebrating and featuring great music and musicians.

Adult $40 | Concession $30

This is an excerpt only. The choir performing in this clip is NOT the choir performing for the Festival event. Arguably, ours may not be as large, or even as good, but… it will be a whole lot funner!
