Byron Bay Film Festival returns for its 20th anniversary!
The Northern Rivers is recognised as Australia’s largest regional film hub, and Through the Local Lens brings together a cross-section of the work being made here now.
This year’s films move across drama, documentary, dance, experimental work and animation, with stories shaped by the people, landscapes and ideas of the region. They range from a visceral rural thriller and a poetic exploration of femininity to work created with d/Deaf and disabled artists, stories of recovery and resilience, environmental art, friendship, memory, masculinity and films where bodies move through coastlines, rivers and wild places.
Some are deeply personal; others are playful, unsettling or formally adventurous. Together they show the breadth of filmmaking happening across the Northern Rivers and the very different ways local filmmakers are turning this place, and the lives lived within it, into cinema.
With many of the filmmakers joining us in person, Through the Local Lens is a chance to discover new work from our own backyard and meet the people making it.
